Day 2 Pictures

The patio outside the Sendek's apartment.  There are hummingbirds, orchids, lemons and other lush plants.  You can hear voices of neighbors, birds chirpping, and sometimes music and traffic.

The daily newspaper

No microwave.  This quickly heats up water for instant coffee, tea.  I put some in the dishwater since they don't have hot water.

Breakfast and reading the Spanish news.

View from the campus grounds.  It was an unusually hazy day today.  The campus has lots of inclines and uneven sidewalks.

Steve and Patrice are here from northern California as volunteers until March 1st.  They came just three weeks ago in order to learn Spanish.  Their daughter is marrying a man from Guadalajara and they want to be able to speak with his parents.  Steve became very fatherly with us and took us on a walk to the grocery store.  He walks there everyday and advised us it was okay for us to go since he was with us.

The doorman who opened the gate and locked it behind us everytime.

This captures the steep decline that and path that took us to the grocery store. It was about 8 steep up and and down blocks with stairs, thin walkways and uneven pavement.  So glad we got Kailey Zig Techs for her trip.

Much of the sidewalk looked like this.  I had to look down the entire time to avoid breaking an ankle.

Does Bimbo mean "Wonder?" as in white bread?

This grocery store is called "Exito" and is cheaper than most.  The fruit looked fabulous and well-displayed.

Kailey wanted to have some Pesos.  She can use her debit card to access cash.  There is a $5 exchange fee.  Purchases are made with her Visa card.

Coming from the dairy state, you can imagine my horror when I saw the eggs displayed without refrigeration!  Those small speckled ones are quail eggs.  Didn't get any unrefrigerated eggs.  Think I will stick with granola and refrigerated yogurt.

They sell motor bikes right in the grocery store!  The exchange rate is about 2:1.  So, $3790 is roughly $1700 in dollars.  "Honey, can you pick up a gallon of milk and...oh yeah....I could use a new motor bike."

The Sendek's living room area.  It is a 4 bedroom apartment and they have been here for 18 years.

The grocery store is two stories!  Upstairs is more of a discount store with clothes, electronic and household things.

We walked 5 more blocks to a bakery.  This was a view of a rushing creek and the landscape.

Steve's favorite destination.  An open-air bake shop.

Awesome breads and sweet things with fruit.

Do you even believe this was on the tables of the bakery???

These hole things were everywhere along the sidewalk.  If it wasn't rocks, steps, inclines, ledges or slopes....it was holes.  So many opportunities for casualties.

On our way back from our excursion.  Mountain climbing will be Kailey's new mode of exercise.

Don't have a clue how we got there and have no idea of how to get back.  Kailey wrote down the address and Steve is our tour guide.
